When setting up our logistics chain from Coolpack and De Ridder in Assendelft to our customers’ various locations, the focus is on minimizing the burden on the environment and reducing CO2 emissions. Sustainability is not a buzzword for us; we take it seriously, from the moment we open the warehouse door, right through to delivery to the customer. The entire logistics chain goes under the microscope!
Race to Zero
Coolpack and De Ridder are part of the Bunzl group. Within Bunzl, sustainability is high on the agenda. Bunzl’s Sustainability manager Joost Lips explains in this article how we put our ambitious goals into practice. Worldwide, Bunzl with all its companies is 60% more CO2 efficient than in 2010. That’s quite an achievement to be proud of. But it tastes like more…. Bunzl, Coolpack and De Ridder have the ambition to be 25% more CO2 efficient in 2025 compared to 2019 and in 2030, even 50% more. We are also participating in the United Nations’ Race to zero campaign and working towards zero emissions by 2050. For this purpose, 4 key points have been defined: transport vehicles, company cars, green energy and the optimization of company premises.

Sustainability in logistics: The most sustainable mile was never driven
We’re going full throttle in our Race to Zero, and we can’t do it alone. We are asking our freight transporters to think with us. For example, the transporters are deploying electric trucks and trucks with Euronorm 6. Euronorm 6 is the strictest European environmental standard for pollutant emissions from road vehicles. By reducing emissions, Euronorm 6 helps improve air quality and reduce the negative effects of those emissions on the climate and human and animal health. Of course, the most sustainable mile is the mile we don’t drive. Reducing transport kilometers is therefore an integral part of our transport policy. Where possible, deliveries from different contracts to the same locations are combined, return trips are also loaded with packaging material. In this way, our drivers do not deliver unnecessary kilometers. The following also applies in the logistics chain Less is more! With this working method, Coolpack and De Ridder save an average of 15,000 transport kilometres and we reduce 73,000 kilos of CO2 emissions.
Not just large transport, but the entire fleet
We don’t just look at major transportation, but also at our own fleet. There, too, we choose sustainable. When we replace our company cars, we choose electric cars. Currently, half of our fleet is already electric, and by 2025 all of them will be. We charge these cars with electricity from our own solar panels. We have 783 solar panels on our roof to reduce our CO2 emissions. In the summer we are even energy neutral!
