A proper combination of cooling elements (such as gel packs, water packs or PCMs) and properly insulating packing material prevents undesirable temperature fluctuations. Only under these conditions does a logger provide reproducible and representative measurement data.

Cooperation between logger, cold source and insulation

Measurement quality is partly determined by the positioning of the logger and the construction of the overall packaging system. Important factors include:

• Type and melting point of the cooling element used (water, gel, PCM);
• Insulation value and stratification of packaging material;
• The physical location of the logger relative to product and cold source.

A logger lying against a cooling element may structurally display too low values. A logger lying too close to an opening or at the top of the box may measure spikes when opened or during handling. Only thoughtful packaging design prevents these measurement distortions.

Pharmaceutical and diagnostic distribution

Products such as insulin, biological samples and diagnostic kits are extremely sensitive to temperature fluctuations. Distributors and logistics providers are required by law to be able to provide temperature data demonstrating that the products have remained within acceptable margins.
